The insurer Walter Neff (Fred MacMurray) meets Phyllis Dietrichson (Barbara Stanwyck), the wife of a client, whose sensuality will fascinate him to the point that he becomes first her lover and then an accomplice in the murder of her husband. After taking out insurance on his life, the two develop a plan to receive double the compensation (hence the original title, Double Indemnity) in the event of his death occurring in rare circumstances. To obtain the sum, they first decide to murder the man in the car, and then throw him onto the tracks, thus making people believe that his death was due to a fall from the train. But the plan will encounter an insurmountable obstacle: Walter will in fact be unmasked by his great friend and colleague Barton Keyes (Edward G. Robinson)...
